Reinventing the Wheel?

Flying training is depressed. That is not news. The reasons why flying training is depressed though, extend far beyond the mere after-effects of recession.

It now costs between sixty and eighty dollars an hour dual to learn to fly. The cost of a basic restricted PPL (Private Pilots Licence) stands at around $3500 while conversion to full unrestricted grading adds another two thousand or so dollars. Anyone really wanting to fly an aeroplane must certainly possess an unrestricted licence or forever be doomed to shooting circuits at the local aerodrome. This then adds up to between five and six thousand dollars just to obtain a basic license. In order to remain safe a pilot must fly fairly regularly, certainly at least once a month, and with average hire costs running at around forty to sixty dollars an hour for a two or four-place single that is another expense that makes flying one of the world’s most expensive leisure activities.
