DC-2 Race is on!

The great DC-2 race is on and they are not even flying yet. The goal is to see which DC-2, be it a local or one flying overseas, will be the aircraft that flies the Australian skies in 1984 to take part in the 50th-anniversary re-run of the 1934 London to Melbourne Air Race, better known as the MacRobertson Air Race.

At Essendon Airport, Victoria, one of the four remaining Australian DC-2s is being feverishly worked on with the 1984 goal ever in mind. Only time and money are potential holdups. The aircraft, its original nickname was ‘Elzapoppin’, is being worked on by owners Jack McDonald, Jim Wright and Paul Backas as well as a team of volunteers. While the project is past the halfway mark there is still a lot of detail work to be done and this is where holdups may occur.
