In Vietnam airlift made a contribution to the battle unparalleled in the history of war. The United States 7th Air Force which controlled this unique airlift operation through the 834th Air Division reported in 1970 that ‘the massive weight airlifted country has already surpassed the combined totals airlifted during such noteworthy operations in the past as the Berlin airlift, the (Hump) airlift over the Himalayas to China during the 2nd World War and tactical airlift during the Korean War’.

In the years 1964 to 1972, members of the RAAF flying their Caribou transport aircraft played a not inconsiderable part in this statistically staggering air movement of arms, men and materials. They achieved remarkable results beyond what might normally be expected of a single squadron because of their keenness and because they were willing to push flying time and cargo loads to the limit.
