Hands to flying stations, hands to flying stations. . . ‘ So started the pipe that prepared sailors to launch and recover a Bell 206 from more than 130 hours flying around Asia over the past three months.
The Bell was deployed to Asia aboard HMAS Stalwart, a destroyer tender and nowadays the RAN’s flagship. Stalwart and four other ships left Sydney for Asia on February 28; she returned to her home port on June 1 and berthed at Garden Island at 1000, but the helo had already returned to base, the Naval Air Station, Nowra.
There have been a number of changes at Nowra since the helo flight embarked in Stalwart. But what is clear is the Federal Government’s commitment to helicopter aviation within the RAN.
