Study Tour of California Airports Report

While researching the Regional Airline Directory published in AUSTRALIAN AVIATION in September last year, I became aware of a significant degree of concern being felt by more than one large commuter airline operator, relating to the treatment of General Aviation and Commuter aircraft by Air Traffic Control.

While some operators spoken to privately expressed dissatisfaction with the present system as affectstq_eir operations, most were reluctant to speak about it ‘on – the record’. All persons spoken to specifically asked for their names to be suppressed from publication in any article that may be written on the subject. In December 1982, I told the story of Air Traffic Control from the controllers’ viewpoint, exposing some of the pressures and problems encountered by ATC staff in their daily work. It is only a matter of fairness though, that I feel some significance should be attached to what the representatives of the Commuter and General Aviation industries have been saying for quite some years apparently. . albeit discreetly.

The matter has been such a topic of concern in fact, that recently a study group tour of Californian Airports was undertaken, specifically relating to Air Traffic Control Management. The study team comprised of three Department of Aviation representatives, David Hood – the Chief Airport Planning Engineer, Scotty Fairbairn – of Flying Operations, and Peter O’Connell – representing ATC.
