Setair Expands:
In this age of shrinking markets, decreasing yields and generally grim economic forecasting, it is a refreshing change to see some good old-fashioned growth. Setair, who probably will go down in the nineteen eighties’ aeronautical history as the only people able to make money from operating DC-3s, are expanding and re-organising their Melbourne-based passenger and cargo charter operation. Setair will continue to use the venerable DC-3 as the mainstay of their operation and recently purchased an additional two aircraft, VH-SBL and EWE which brings their entire DC-3 fleet to six, four in routine service and two in reserve. Setair have been negotiating with East West for some time and have also taken delivery of an F-27 Friendship which will be used for night freight missions flying newspapers between Melbourne/Canberra/Sydney. There has also been consistent rumour of a larger aircraft, such as a DC-6, but this has been seen in the short term as hardly viable with so much excess capacity in the longer haul heavy lift market.
Speeding Movements at KSA:
The perennial problem of how to get more traffic into and out of Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport will not go away though certainly the go-ahead on a third runway, of 2600 m length, is a step in the right direction. Detailed design will take about two years with an additional four to five years required in the construction phase. The new runway will actually be 200 m longer than the east/west runway 07/25 and will allow greater use of aircraft movements over Botany Bay. When the new runway is operational it will actually reduce the number of movements over residential areas of Sydney.
