That Pilots of the Royal Australian Navy Flew Active Combat Missions in Vietnam With the United States Army Is a Little Known Fact. In This Fascinating Article Dennis Newton Documents . . . .

On November 2, 1967, the 135th Assault Helicopter Company of the 12th Combat Aviation Group, United States Army, began its first combat operations over South Vietnam. Sprinkled among the U. S. personnel were a number of Australians. These were the men of the First Contingent, Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV). This integration of two nationalities into one company was an experiment. The Company was designated as an ” Experimental Military Unit”. Because of this the 135th became known as the EMUs.

The 135th Aviation Company had been formed on July 1, 1965, at Fort Benning, Georgia. At the time it was equipped with Caribou transport aircraft but in February 1967, it converted to helicopters. Then, early in October, the 135th, now renamed an “assault helicopter company”, was deployed in Vietnam.
