For air combat, the Hornet at left is equipped with two radar-guided Sparrow missiles on the fuselage, two Sidewinder heat-seeking missiles at the wing tips, and an internal 20 mm cannon. The Hornet on the right mounts 28 bombs, a forward-looking infrared pod, a laser spot tracker pod, and retains the Sidewinders and cannon for self-defence

The RAAF’s Canberra aircraft are to be retired later this year after nearly 30 years of service Originally, the aircraft were scheduled to be withdrawn from operations in 1984, but because of increasing maintenance costs and as part of Defence Force economies it has been decided to bring forward their retirement date.
