Comment – Pilot Training Opportunities
(Barney Fernandes is the Managing Director of the Australian Flying Training School, which is a government-approved Integrated Pilot Training School).
The market in pilot training for the Free World has traditionally belonged to Britain and America. It so happened that after World War II, private enterprises in these two countries, with support from their respective Governments and aviation industry, set about establishing and developing professional pilot training colleges. This was not aimed at meeting their own immediate commercial pilot requirements, because they did have an over-supply of highly skilled ex-World War II aircrew at the time, but, with foresight, to meet the needs of the developing countries. Therefore, Hamble, Oxford and Perth are today place names known the world over to be synonymous with professional pilot training.
The professional flying schools in the United States concentrated on the lucrative business that was available in Japan, the Philippines, South America and Canada. The British who, in 1945, still had a string of dominions and colonies, virtually had a captive market. Literally thousands of Cadet Pilots from the developing nations in the Commonwealth, the Middle East and Africa, would have been trained in Britain since the early fifties. With that magnitude of market support, it is no wonder that “Air Service Training” Perth, now has a capacity to accommodate up to 400 students, and is known as Britain’s Air University. However, all this could be history.
