The Aussie Airbus

Trans-Australia Airlines’ first move into wide-bodied operation, the acquisition of the A300 Airbus, is in many ways a revealing insight into the character of the airline.

Firstly there is the acute recognition of a market need – the realisation that the stage has been reached where not only big lumps of capacity are needed but also a means to provide different products to suit different purchasers of travel. The Airbus cabin provides a sharp differentiation for the first-class business traveller. At the same time, there is the ability to carry others at different fare levels, using the capacity of the aircraft to sell cheaper advance-purchase tickets as well as immediate, full-fare ones.

Then there’s cargo. Unlike Ansett, TAA doesn’t have dedicated; freighters like the Electra. But climaxing a rapid expansion of its freight carriage, where it has dramatically overhauled and passed Ansett, it has created a need for freighter-size capacity than the under-floor holds can provide.
