Aircraft accident investigation reports are usually grisly but always fascinating reading. Some of the most detailed and analytical of reports on major air accidents come from the US National Transportation Safety Board. It was established by the US Congress to ” … promote transportation safety by conducting independent accident investigations … ” in all modes of transport – aviation, highway, rail, pipeline and marine.

To carry out effectively its varied role, the board is structured into a small, multi-discipline organisation that has gained worldwide recognition for its special skills in accident investigation – particularly its ability to mount an immediate response to an accident whether on the slopes of a volcano in Antarctica or on the roof of a skyscraper in New York City.
