In Active Service – Maritime

Maritime patrol is a very important part of Australia’s defence network, and to efficiently carry out this task, the Royal Australian Air Force operates the Number 92 (Maritime) Wing. Based at Edinburgh in South Australia, Number 92 Wing consists of Numbers 10 and 11 Squadrons, an associated training squadron, and Number 492 Maintenance Squadron. Number 10 Squadron operates the Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft, while 11 Squadron operates the earlier P-3B version. In spite of Australia’s immense size, 92 Wing Orions can be positioned rapidly in remote maritime areas to cope with a wide range of maritime contingencies.

Maritime surveillance, which encompasses antisubmarine warfare, is the most common of 92 Wing’s tasks, but the Orions are also involved in search and rescue and coastal surveillance for Customs, Immigration, and other government departments.

Squadrons

Number 1 0 Squadron was formed in July 1939 in England, and was the first squadron of the British Dominions to go into action against the enemy in World War II. Equipped with Short Sunderland flying boats, 1 0 Squadron remained in England for the duration of the war and returned to Australia in 1945 where it was disbanded. It was reformed in 1949 with GAF Lincoln bombers, and in 1953 1 0 Squadron changed its role to that of maritime reconnaissance. In 1962, the squadron was re-equipped with Lockheed Neptune aircraft and based at Townsville in Northern Queensland. In 1978 the Neptune was phased out of RAAF service, and 10 Squadron was re-located to join 11 Squadron at Edinburgh, and was reequipped with 1 0 Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft.
