The Bib Stillwell Story

If there was one single name in General Aviation that was widely known to the lay public outside the aviation industry it must have been Bib Stillwell. The “Bib” part of it certainly helped, for this was a unique three-letter name, but to be serious, the man had become a national figure before he got Into aviation at all – he was the great Australian racing drive of his day.

Now he is out of Australian aviation, barring some “associate” interest, and well on the way to becoming President of the greatest American maker of bizjets. He is now settled in at Tucson, that Arizona desert city known to most of us only as a location for relatively minor Westerns. At 52 he is vice president of Gates Learjet Corporation, with most of his superiors aging into the 70s and certain to leave the active scene early in this decade.

General comment in the industry here is that the Yanks simply wouldn’t import a high executive from Australia just to do that particular job – in his case marketing – with the rank of senior vice president. He is responsible for domestic, international and government marketing, as well as marketing support and product support functions.
