Helicopter Future Bright:

The future of the helicopter certainly is looking bright. Rapid growth in the search for offshore oil is producing a boom i n helicopter operations that is beyond compare in aviation history. There are currently 600 offshore drilling rigs worldwide and this figure is expected to double in the next five years. Furthermore the proportion of rigs located at distances greater than 100mls from land is rapidly increasing thereby requiring larger and more powerful helicopters to provide service and support. Bell has sold a lot of 205 and 212 helicopters to the oil developers and now these aircraft are being replaced or combined with Sikorsky S-61s, Aerospatiale Pumas and Boeing Vertrol civil Chinooks. In the Gulf of Mexico alone there are over 800 platforms from which 6,000 people are moved every day by about 500 helicopters.

Cessna on Top:

Cessna sold 67,000 aircraft during the last decade and are planning on building more than 100,000 aircraft during the nineteen eighties. The 100,000 will include 2000 Citation jets and 4000 turboprops. Overall Cessna expect a worldwide growth of 25 per cent in charter operations and a 50 per cent growth in General Aviation during this decade.
