It was a logical progression … there wasn’t really much else to do with the timeless 172 after they put a constant speed prop on it and called it the Skyhawk XP.

Ever since Wichita hit on the money-making – and customer-generating – formula of designing what amounts to one of the most popular airborne family cars ever made, they’ve really made only cosmetic changes to a 23-year-old copy.

Cosmetic if one discounts the various power plants installed at the 172’s sharp end; it was at first a 150hp aircraft until 1977. Then Cessna put in a 175hp motor driving a prop through gearing but that didn’t really hit the jackpot as the Model 175.
