The List Gets Shorter
In the 1977 edition of AADR we provided readers with an in-depth analysis of more than a doze”! pos ible, replacements for Australia’s Mirage force. At the time It would not have been extreme to comment that almost anything that could fly and fire a mi ile was in there and trying.
Th tep to liminating many of the “non applicable” air craft was the iong awaited hortlist, this being handed down in F deral Parliament by the Minister for Defence on April 7, 1978. From the original dozen or so contenders there remain •d only five aircraft; the McDonnell Douglas F15 Ea_gle, the G n ral Dynamics F16, the onhrop F18L (the navalrsed F18 Hornet was also mentioned by the Minister but for the sake of unilormity w will restrict our analysis to the land-based orthrop F18L), the Panavia Tornado and finally France’s Mirage 2000.
