Dash Eighty, 20 years of the 707

Next time you board a modern jet airliner, almost regardless of make, spare a thought for that first Boeing prototype which helped make your current flight possible – the old Dash Eighty, Boeing Model 367-80 which on July 15, 1954 took com­mercial aviation into the jet age.

Boeing have always been trendsetters.

Prior to World War II Bill Boeing produced the enormous XB15 long range bomber. With the commencement of hostilities, Boeing was already well advanced with the B17 and later the B29 projects. Both these bombers made way for development of the Stratoliner, two deck Stratocruiser and C97 aircraft. In the late ’40s Boeing again produced the all jet B47 bomber for the Strategic Air Command. This was in turn followed by the unique B52, which today enters its third decade as the spearhead of SACs airborne deterrent.
