Nomad

The next six months could make or break the Nomad, Mr H. H. Dolphin, Government Aircraft Factories’ General Manager, told me recently. If the Nomad can get a good run of sales, particularly in the North American area, the whole project could eventually see 300 or more Nomads sold.

This is a vital matter for Australia’s little aerospace in­ dustry. With the possible postponement of final decisions about building a new trainer in this country to replace the Macchi the RAAF now uses, the industry really has only one major aircraft project underway . . . Nomad.

If Nomad fails the industry will never again be allowed to use considerable public funds for another design/develop/produce aircraft project. And without an air­ craft to design and build no country has a viable aerospace in­ dustry. Making bits and pieces for foreign manufacturers is not the basis for an industry. The argument for having an aerospace industry is largely based on its military potential in war – the RAAF and the RAN and the Army need a sizeable aerospace industry to keep their aircraft flying in war. The skills and experience needed for that emergency come from a properly based industry.
