In a strongly worded statement, ELA said the decision was “forced by the inability to finalise a lease” for the expansion of its Arnhem Space Centre, which it blamed on the Northern Land Council.
The business could have opted for a lift-off date this month but has shifted the plan back to 2025 to complete “final testing and verification activities” and hand its team a break over Christmas.
The Sydney-based company said Vertiia – which plans to eventually travel up to 1,000km powered by hydrogen – has now taken off, flown and landed more than 50 times successfully using battery power.
The carrier’s CEO, Alistair Dorward, argued any support should be offered to the industry as a whole to ensure an “even playing field for all operators”.
The industry body argued the amount is a “significant sum” to its smaller members, who would likely only receive a fraction of the money should the carrier be eventually liquidated.
