Around Australia Record Flight
Pilot Sets Round Australia Record
Matthew Green, A Nineteen Year Old Canberra Pilot Has Broken The Record For The Youngest Pilot To Fly The Four Corners Of Australia, But Remarkably, He Did It With Only 105 Hours Total Flying Experience.
The 14,000km trip, which took 75.5 hours, was flown anti-clockwise and entailed flying over Cape Byron, Cape York, Steep Point in WA, and South East Cape in Tasmania. This added an extra 4000km to the official around Australia route, but also enabled him to set a speed record between Hobart and Canberra. Ground observers at each point confirmed his overflight.
I interviewed Matthew at Canberra Airport to find out how he planned the trip, his navigation techniques and of course how the actual trip went. The idea for the attempt on the previous record came from his father who had discovered whilst working for the Royal Federation of Aero Clubs of Australia that it had been set by a 24 year old American woman in 1994. His father, a private pilot himself, suggested that the opportunity to challenge the record was there and encouraged him to take it. Matthew acknowledges that he was inspired by the round the world flight recently made by Jon Johanson.
