Dick Smith’s Airspace Review
In an unprecedented but innovative move, the head of AirServices Australia, Bill Pollard, has invited Dick Smith, vocal critic of the proposed airspace plan, to put forward his own proposal for an alternative airspace design.
Followers of the airspace saga will be aware that Dick Smith has vowed to continue the fight against the plan that is now being implemented, maintaining that it is really only a name change for the old system, but more importantly that it will prove to be more expensive than before. He has now been given six weeks to design an airspace model including procedures and other elements, for consideration by the Airspace Steering Group.
In an interview with AA, Bill Pollard said that he had initiated the move to invite Dick Smith to undertake the task, following discussion with the Minister and the AirServices Board chairman. He also confirmed that it was his understanding that Dick Smith has agreed to end his public objection to the presently proposed system should the Airspace Steering Group not accept his proposal.
