WSI shapes up for shipping

As its opening day for passengers approaches, Australia’s newest international gateway is now up and running for 24/7 freight operations – how will it reshape cargo operations in Sydney’s west?

It’s official: WSI is open for business – sort of. While passengers won’t be flying out of the new airport until 25 October, freight operations officially kicked off in July, with Qantas Freight, Team Global Express and Texel Air among the first airlines to begin flights out of Western Sydney’s new cargo precinct.

“This 24-hour efficient cargo precinct will help to provide access to Australian businesses to premium global markets,” WSI chief executive Simon Hickey says. “And every hour saved from the supply chain provides opportunity for Aussie suppliers; it provides confidence to international buyers; and a real boost for local jobs and local businesses. Like everything at WSI, this cargo precinct is built for growth, and it will grow in line with demand over the decades ahead. And ultimately, that just means more opportunity for Australian businesses and the community of Western Sydney in terms of great jobs.
