Free to a good home: 40 years of aviation history
An Australian Aviation reader is looking for help finding a place for a massive time capsule of photographic slides from Sydney Airport spanning the better part of a half-century.
Long-time readers of Australian Aviation might remember photo contributions from John Vogel, whose snapshots of comings and goings at Sydney Airport graced our pages from the late 1970s through to the mid-1990s. Sadly, John passed away in 2000 – but according to his best friend Steve Wedell, he left behind a veritable treasure trove of history: between 30,000 and 40,000 Kodachrome slides documenting some four decades of Sydney air traffic.
“The collection of Aviation Slides was in the main taken at Sydney Airport and surrounds, using high quality lenses and Kodachrome 25 slide film, from the 70s, 80s and 90s, but also some from the 60s,” says Wedell. “The collection has virtually documented the entire life of every aircraft of every type and every colour scheme that appeared or used the airport, with particular interest in take-off and landing, on all runways, as well as static.”
