Warbirds Over Scone is preparing for take-off in 2026. (Warbirds Over Scone)
Warbirds #399 | Restorations, Warbirds over Scone, and a new museum
Just in time for spooky season, a Vampire is said to be making its way down to the beautiful, tiny town of Dareton in western NSW – a de Havilland Vampire fighter jet, that is. Three truckloads worth of Vampire Mk35A parts have been delivered to nearby Mildura RSL by the Royal Australian Air Force Heritage branch, before being faithfully entrusted to the members of Dareton Men’s Shed, 20km away.
Using these parts, allegedly parted from at least three Australian Vampire planes, the team will reconstruct a 1950s era RAAF dual-seat and dual-tail configured Vampire fighter. Unfortunately, no serial numbers have been identified as of yet; however, aside from this, the condition of many of the spare parts is surprisingly decent. When completed, the plane will join the growing display fleet of Mildura’s Royal Australian Air Force Museum.
