Opinion: Does Alan Joyce deserve a second chance?
And just like that, he was back.
Alan Joyce, the most famous (or infamous) figure in our sector, was the keynote speaker at our annual Australian Aviation Summit. If you were surprised to see him there, then, if I’m honest, we were, too. Next to nothing has been said by him since he stepped down as Qantas CEO more than two years ago, with the Australian public having decided that he was solely responsible for bringing their much-loved national carrier into disrepute. Since then, the Flying Kangaroo’s board has substantially reduced Joyce’s exit bonuses. Two biographies have painted a fairly damning portrait of his time in charge, while an investigation after his exit criticised his “command and control” leadership style.
