Can Virgin’s Miraculous Comeback Continue?
My Colleague, Jake Nelson, has been a busy man these past few months. It didn’t occur to me until far too late, but our senior journalist has penned almost half the issue! Luckily for us, he’s the best journalist on the beat and, for our website, has broken scores of agenda-setting exclusives.
For this issue, though, Jake takes a deep dive into some of the sector’s biggest talking points. First up, for our cover feature, he examines Virgin’s rise and fall and rise again. Australia’s number two carrier looked doomed during COVID-19, when it slumped into administration, shut Tigerair and even lost aircraft to Rex. How times have changed, though. Now Virgin is making a healthy profit for the first time in a decade and is cashed up with investment, as well as 777s from the big aviation beast Qatar.

Hall has now replaced Australian Aviation’s former owner, and podcast host, Christian “Boo” Boucousis to lead Afterburner. Hall talks about the highs of his career so far. Finally, Jake examines what’s next for our recently re-elected Labour government as it continues its ambitious package of reforms to the aviation sector. Is pay-on-delivery really such a good idea? Plus, we have our regulars, as Hannah Dowling displays a masterclass in detail to deliver Traffic, Warbirds and Register.
Before I sign of, though, and on behalf of the entire Australian Aviation team, I would like to wish a speedy recovery to Glenn Collins, who crashed at the Avalon Airshow. As you’ll likely all know, Collins miraculously pulled through and has been transferred to a local hospital in Sydney. The latest update we have, as we go to press, is that he is now well on the road to recovery, though he has suffered spinal injuries. We examine the incident in more detail in our Avalon special.
