New Hunter Warbirds attraction and restoration hub wins $1.5 million

The Hunter region is set to become a new hub for aviation and history enthusiasts alike after the Hunter Warbirds Restoration Facility was awarded $1.48 million by the NSW government. The funds were provided under round two the state government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund and will support the work of the Hunter Warbirds aviation museum and cafe at Scone Aerodrome. The airport itself has just seen a major revamp and expansion of its facilities.

After establishing the unit in 2021, the Hunter Warbirds are already off to a flying start, with multiple aircraft on display including a RAAF Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk, courtesy of Col Pay, a RAAF Dassault Mirage IIIO(F) courtesy of the Hunter Fighter Collection and will soon welcome a RAF De Havilland Vampire FB.5 among many others. The Hunter Warbirds have also organised and participated in multiple flight displays including the Festival of Flight and Warbirds over Scone. Volunteers of the Hunter Warbirds say the newly awarded funds will help to build a new hangar to store and display its heritage and ex-wartime aircraft.
