Qantas farewells its last Queen of the Skies, the 747-438ER

Leaving Australian soil for the last time. Onlookers at Shep’s Mound in Sydney wiped away tears, cheered and waved souvenir 747 farewell flags as they viewed the final moment the 747-438ER left our shores. (Source: Seth Jaworski)

While this isn’t the first time Qantas has farewelled a 747, it has certainly been the most poignant as we say a final goodbye to a long reigning Queen, with the B747- 400ER series VH-OEJ taking to the skies for a final time.

The first Boeing 747 was delivered in 1969, with the Seattle-based company delivering more than 1,500 of the type in the more than 50 years since. This ‘jumbo jet’ was the first twin aisle airliner, and sat 1.5 times larger than Boeing’s previous aircraft, the 707 series.
