Sydney Airport Celebrates 100 years
The lasting legacy of Nigel Love – Part 2
Following AA&ECo’s formation, Australia benefitted with the development of an aircraft manufacturing industry. Broadsmith collaborated with the University of Sydney and Sydney Technical College investigating suitability of Australian timbers to produce main spars, struts, longerons, propellers and other components. Propellers were made with Queensland maple and Australian Rosewood, with substitutes located for American spruce and ash. Exhaustive tests showed Australian timbers were 30% stronger than English equivalents.
During March 1920 an Avro-supplied float modification kit was fitted to a three-seat 504K with Love and Frank Roberts flying the aircraft from the Cooks River to Manly.
