Knowledge and experience make interesting companions. In theory, as we become more experienced, we should become more knowledgeable. When we are inexperienced, we seek knowledge, yet we are reliant on those who have trodden the same path before us to share their knowledge and experience.

The fact is knowledge is slippery, especially in this digital era when we are cramming more information into our heads than ever before. The downside is that all this new gumpf has to find a home somewhere, usually at the expense of some previously stored useful information on, say, a particular technique or emergency procedure. How true is the saying that instructor pilots have forgotten more than their newly-winged students have learned?

The point being that whether you are a new pilot seeking to understand the theory of aviation or an experienced pilot looking to brush up on your “education”, www.goflyonline.com.au is a
handy resource. It applies to both
skill levels, despite its genesis as an online course for new RPL pilots.

Rusty pilots like me, who continue to struggle with staying on top of everything while flying just a few hours a month, will find real value in Gofly’s video database. It’s very easy to pick and choose topics you feel require a refresher from the database of more than 120 videos.

For the purpose of trialling Gofly’s online training platform, I watched the full series of cross-country lessons to get a feel for the relevance and pace of learning. As I was preparing for my own trip from Bankstown to Narromine for AUSFLY, I was interested to see if I could learn anything new (or remember all the things I’d forgotten).

I was pleasantly surprised with the pace of the lessons, not too fast or slow – especially when reacquainting myself with manual flight planning and working the magic of a whizz wheel. Yes, I’ve become completely dependent on my AvPlan subscription for all my flight planning needs.

The videos comprehensively covered everything you need to know to navigate a successful cross-country. From radio frequencies to controlled airspace and flight planning, all aspects were covered.

Picking and choosing my way through other videos on the platform, the common theme was comprehensive content, yet explained in a very simple manner.

The videos are geared to the recreational pilot, any pilot who’s active in GA, RA or an infrequent aviator

The videos have been filmed by experienced flight instructors and the content really has a global application so students anywhere in the world can accelerate their learning and become better pilots.

Students can revisit any of their past lessons to refresh their memory about what they have learned or selected videos can be reviewed prior to undertaking that lesson. The lessons can be viewed on any device including VR headsets, tablets and smartphones.

The website operates as a Netflix-style site with a mix of free and subscription-only videos.

Will the videos replace a flying instructor? Unlikely. The videos are geared to the recreational pilot, any pilot who’s active in GA, RA or an infrequent aviator who seeks a deeper understanding of the theoretical side of aviation.

The full series (premium subscription) includes:

All 11 ab initio pilot training lessons for the RAA recreational pilot certificate course created by a highly experienced flight instructor (contains over 33 pre-flight, inflight and summary videos)

Bonus footage in 360-degree view for the inflight RPC lessons
