ADF employs the long and the short of it
In 1794 the French Aerostatic Corps was established and charged with using balloons for reconnaissance and observation purposes during the French Revolutionary wars. Kept afloat by hydrogen supplied by portable units, this cutting edge new capability made its debut at the Battle of Fleurus on June 26 1794 when the army of the First French Republic confronted a combined army of soldiers from Britain, Hanover, the Dutch Republic and the Hapsburg Monarchy.
