Adelaide Airport is trialling new 3D X-Ray machines and body scanners, as well as an automated tray return system, that will allow travellers to keep their laptops and other electronic devices in their bags when going through the security checkpoint. Participation in the trial is optional, with travellers having the choice of using either the new equipment or existing security scanners.

A report from air travel technology provider SITA has found travellers are increasingly using technology services for every stage of the journey, from booking the flight to immigration clearance and keeping track of their check-in bags. The annual SITA passenger IT insights report found there were higher satisfaction rates for those using technology across nine different stages of the passenger journey. The report said the contrast in satisfaction between tech-enabled passengers and those who relied on face-to-face service was particularly marked at three key points – during dwell time (+5.8 per cent), on board the aircraft (+8.1 per cent), and when collecting luggage at the carousel (+8.6 per cent).

Canberra Airport is extending one of its taxiways to run the full length of the main runway to streamline arrivals and make it safer for aircraft to move about on the airfield. Currently, the two taxiways for Runway 17/35 only cover part of the airport’s main runway. However, the extension, announced on April 17, will extend taxiway B to run the entire length of the main Runway 17/35 and eliminate the need to cross the runway via taxiway A. The project, which has been contracted mainly to Canberra companies, will employ 80 and is expected to take between 12-18 months.
