Since the earliest days of powered flight, clean, quiet and reliable electric propulsion has been the dream of aviators and aircraft designers alike.

The first electrically-powered airship was flown in 1881, predating the Wright Brothers by more than two decades. Yet despite the successful utilisation of electric propulsion on airships at the dawn of the aviation era, limitations in scalability and power storage led to electric units being largely overlooked in favour of combustion engines.
