So near and yet …
World title missed by a split second
In mid-November I was racing in the last round of the Red Bull Air Race (RBAR) World Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. My team and I had a pretty clear goal: win the race. If we could do that and have the results from the two other teams in the title hunt go our way, then a world championship would be ours.
We were the outsiders in this scenario, but we almost pulled it off. Mike Goulian from the USA entered the last race as the championship leader but ended up third. Czech pilot Martin Šonka started the race second and ended as world champion credit to him, he flew brilliantly. We entered third and came out second and did everything we possibly could to beat Martin.
