By the time this column is in the public domain, the loss of Lion Air Flight 610 will be relatively old news by modern standards. More details will have dribbled out and thousands upon thousands of words will have been written, dissecting, discussing and speculating on every aspect of the event. And yet the investigation that will ultimately provide the answers will still be in its early stages.

Already, so many possible factors have been put forward. The fact that the MAX is the latest variant of a long bloodline has drawn points of view, both for and against. The history of Indonesian carriers and their previous ban from European airspace has resurfaced. Rumours of possible faults on the doomed aircraft’s previous sectors, and anomalies in the speed and height profile based upon potentially sketchy and inaccurate ADS-B data were relayed through various apps. These and more have been cast into the swirling mix of media speculation.
