Night eyes NVD
Having operated with Night Vision Systems for my entire flying career, the opportunity to utilise the ‘Night Eyes’ imaging system marked the first significant shift in night vision technology for me in over twenty years. My helicopter flying career commenced with the Australian Army and as such I have been fortunate to enjoy 3rd generation night vision technology from the mid nighties right through to current operations within the civil sector.
Before we continue, it is worth pointing out that my review of this equipment is for the most part subjective. Whilst the Night Eyes were used as part of CASA approved helicopter firebombing trials and quantitative visual resolution data was recorded, the data was solely confined within the context of the firebombing trial and did not include other night vision devices. This review put simply, is an opinion piece.
The context of my observations does however encompass the operational use of night vision across a vast array of operational environments. From defence and SAR operations in low illumination to the high intensity cultural lighting of air ambulance and law enforcement. It is with this experiential background I aim to provide a valid review of the Night Eyes Night Vision Devices (NVD).
