The Australian Space Agency achieves launch
On July 1st, history was made with the commencement of operation of the Australian Space Agency, a milestone in the nation’s space history. The establishment the space agency came after many years of dedicated work from a industry members. A group of de facto leaders within the existing space industry of Australia, and expats working within the international space industry, worked tenaciously to show government the opportunity it would be for Australia, to enter the international space industry.
The role of the Australian Space Agency is not to be the equivalent of a NASA or an ESA (European Space Agency). Our agency is much more practical and modern. The structure of the Agency has been formed with consideration to the increasingly commercial nature of the international space industry, where businesses are leading the work and innovation for every-day space. There are only a couple of national agencies that have the funding to conduct large frontier missions that send infrastrure to other terrestrial bodies. The Australian Space Agency is not one of them. It will instead aim to help local businesses gain a greater share of the US$345 billion global space market, with the intent to build a new major industry for Australia, growing its current global market share of just 0.8 per cent.
