Seventy-six year old Graham has spent more than 40 years building his Super Diamant which is now almost ready to fly with only a few more minor details to attend to plus the normal CASA paperwork. The wood and fabric aircraft has been built from scratch using plans supplied by Claude Piel and is a conventional low-wing, tail wheel aircraft powered by a single 160hp (120kW) Lycoming engine. Piel designed it as a four-seater, but the rear bench seat has a 110kg limit which means it is only really suitable for one adult or two children or 110kg of baggage. Graham’s aircraft is painted white with blue and grey fuselage stripes with the interior very tastefully finished in matching blue and grey.

Claude Piel began designing aircraft in the 1950s with one of his first designs the CP20 Pinocchio. It first flew on June 19 1954 and closely resembled a Spitfire, and was developed into his most popular aircraft the CP30 Emeraude. The original two-seat, 65hp (48kW) Emeraude was an instant success and over the years Piel modified its design to accommodate larger engines, a bubble sliding cockpit cover, wheel spats and tapered wingtips. Amateur builders also included many personal modifications into their aircraft and, as the aircraft was constructed in small numbers by several commercial manufacturers, it almost seems as if no two Emeraudes were the same. Later, and more powerful Emeraudes were called Super Emeraudes and the larger CP60 series were Diamants and Super Diamants.

There have been 13 Emeraudes registered in Australia of which eight remain, with a single Super Emeraude, one Diamant and now Graham’s Super Diamant.

The second GippsAero GA10 has been registered XMH and is either the first production aircraft or the one that will be used for certification of the type – or both. The first GA10, XGY, was registered on February 3 2012 but it has taken more than four years for the second one to fly. Hopefully full production will start soon and GippsAero can then concentrate on the GA18 (nee Nomad) project.

The GA10 is a development of the GA8 Airvan but is fitted with a 450shp Rolls-Royce 250-B17/F2 turbine engine driving a Hartzell three-blade prop with the fuselage stretched to accommodate 10 seats.

Boeing Defence Australia has added another two Airbus Helicopters EC135T2s to the register. ACY and ARL join AQG, noted in the April issue, being the first three of 15 of the type to be delivered to the Navy for the Helicopter Aircrew Training System. The three helicopters will become N52-001, 002 and 003 when they enter service with the Navy.

The Leonardo Helicopters (AgustaWestland) AW139 has been selected to replace Esso’s ageing fleet of Sikorsky S-76Cs with the first of these registered EXA. Esso company uses the helicopters to service its oil and gas platforms in Bass Strait from its heliport at Longford, Victoria.

Twenty aircraft are shown in the Deletions section this issue with a third of these being withdrawn from use and only six exports.

Dash 8 DNU has gone to South Africa after less than two years on the local register. The aircraft was obtained by Hawker Pacific from Uni Airways in Taiwan which was replacing its 14 strong fleet of Dash 8s with ATR 72-600s. The large majority of the Dash 8s went back to Canada with one going to the US and DNU coming to Australia.

Virgin Australia Regional Airlines has started disposing of its Fokker 50s that it inherited from Skywest Airlines and which have been in storage at Perth and Alice Springs for some time. The first to go is FNF which is now with Fanjet Express in Kenya and is marked as 5Y-FJE. It has become the third Fokker 50 in Fanjet Express’ fleet, the operator specialising in fly-in/ fly-out support of the oil, gas and mining industry in north and west Africa and the Middle East. It also has contracts with humanitarian agencies and NGOs in Africa and conducts general charter work.

Beech Super King Air WCN has crossed the Tasman and is now owned by Total Entertainments Consultants in Auckland flying as ZK-SMC, while Dash 8 QQL has gone to Canada and the AEAR Explorer ONA is now in the US.

The Explorer is a single-engine, high-wing, strut-braced, 10-seater designed by Aeronautical Engineers Australia Research which first flew during 1998. It features a unique retractable undercarriage where the right main gear folded to the left and the left gear folded to the right. The two undercarriage legs crossed before folding away into sponsons under the fuselage. This enabled the aircraft to boast a large flat cabin floor and a low cabin entry height.

Only one aircraft was built before production rights were sold to Explorer Aircraft at Houston, Texas. Explorer Aircraft offers a turbine-powered 500T model with a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-135B engine, and a stretched 750T model seating 16 as well as a float-equipped version. It seems that the company has not yet produced an American-built aircraft and now the Australian-built prototype, ONA, has been transferred to the new company and is now flying as N718DA.

Three aircraft have been deleted due to accidents, unfortunately resulting in three deaths. Maule HOG collided with powerlines spanning the Clarence River near Casino, NSW while conducting a low-level flight along the river during April 2014. The aircraft came to rest inverted with the cabin submerged.

Pitts 12 JDZ was destroyed at Bishops Bridge, near Maitland, NSW during aerobatics with only the pilot on board on July 8 last year, while Robinson R44 KJJ was conducting mustering operations 150km south-west of Timber Creek, NT, during June last year when it failed to return to its base. The wreckage was found later along with the deceased pilot.

The change of owner or operator listing this month is dominated by aircraft changing hands after the sad demise of the Royal Queensland Aero Club on March 24. The club was established in 1919 and was one of the oldest flying schools in the world, certainly within Australia. The Airline Academy of Australia and ATAE, both part of the RQAC group, are also affected with pilots, maintenance and admin staff now looking for new jobs. Three of the club’s Cessna 172s and one Cessna U206 have gone to RR and CR Investments with a couple of other aircraft now owned by private individuals and still more awaiting sale.
