Airlines are reporting profits, new aircraft are on order and there are even reports of pilot recruitment. Generally, the only time to trust any pilot recruitment news is when one is strapped into the seat at the end of a runway and about to advance the thrust levers. Still, there does seem to be some cause for hope.

As we all know, aviation is a cyclical industry that is generally either boom or bust. Time and again it has demonstrated that it can go from the doldrums to a bonanza and back again within the span of just a few years. The current looming surge has come on the tail of a long drought, when movement within pilot bodies has been virtually non-existent and recruitment offices have been disbanded. Online applications have entered a hold file, gathering virtual dust.
