Neil Hansford says: Whilst fuel remains in its current range Qantas has the advantage of a fleet of low capital cost/low debt servicing high capacity aircraft to be able to match and expand capacity very competitively. Just imagine how good this result would have been if the right decision had been taken in the Dixon era and Qantas had taken up the red hot deal for a fleet of 777s. Joyce can’t be blamed for the poor decisions of his predecessors – he just lives with their poor judgement.

The road runner says: Armed recon can be achieved by a number of systems in the 21st century. CAS and recon has been done by drones very well for over a decade. Persistence and time on station are very valuable assets to have in an armed recon platform.
An armed recon helicopter can only stay airborne for a number of hours (six hours approx) compared to a Reaper that can stay in the air for a day or 42 hours depending on what version is purchased. Both Reaper and ARH have positive and negative points.
Jason says: ARH is a good helicopter, the gun is second to none, it’s fast and nimble, and the sight is also very good. Most of its issues are due to [lack of]commonality with US systems such as its Eurogrid datalink, some stores clearance validation work, hot/high performance, and the well-publicised ongoing sustainment problems.
As for the French and Germans operating Tigers . . . yes, but that is/was with French and German forces, not in coalition ops. We don’t operate alone…
Airnorth begins Wellcamp operations
GBRGB says: I agree a Townsville–Toowoomba service would be well supported, three times a week or so. The Q400 TSV–CNS is sufficient, I use it regularly, a jet service would only save about five minutes anyway so not sure it’s worth it. Airnorth already does international to Timor Leste so perhaps they could be a candidate for a Townsville–Port Moresby service they are talking about.

Davecat says: Where would this city be without the marvel of aviation, one of the most remote cities in the world now connected to the world. Great for trade, commerce, tourism and keeping families connected. Let’s just share the noise across the burbs on a rotational basis, perhaps monthly, avoid curfews that constrain growth and choice and continue to enjoy the prosperity. The other option is to move the airport 150km out of town to some paddock, no thanks.
