Australian flyers look with envy on their American and even European counterparts, who are now used to sitting down, taking off and getting online.

Inflight internet is widespread within the United States thanks to the air-to-ground (ATG) network provided by Gogo, the company that evolved from Aircell, which provided the swipe-your-card-tospeak inflight telephones that were the height of mid-1990s technology.
