Claude Ryan began building aircraft during the late 1920s when he designed and built the B1 Brougham, the most famous being the highly modified long-range version Spirit of St Louis flown by Charles Lindbergh across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris on May 20 1927. Four came to Australian during 1928 and all but one crashed the same year. The fourth lasted until it was destroyed by enemy action in New Guinea during January 1942.
