Register Review

During the mid-1930s Ryan again took to designing and building aircraft when he had trouble finding suitable aircraft for his flying school and charter business. He came up with a low-wing, open cockpit, tandem two-seater called the ST Sport Trainer. The ST had an all-metal fuselage and wooden-sparred, wire-braced wings. Originally fitted with a Menasco inverted in-line engine it was later fitted with a Kinner radial powerplant and hundreds were built as a primary trainer for the US military during WW2. Thirty Ryan STs have appeared on the local register over the years in ST-A, ST-M and ST‑3KR configuration.

After the success of the ST Ryan saw the need for an enclosed-cabin, fast and comfortable touring aircraft. Ryan took the basic ST metal fuselage, widened it to accommodate side-by-side seating for two and enclosed the cockpit. He also added all-metal wings and replaced the Menasco engine with a 145hp (108kW) Warner Super Scarab radial powerplant. The result was the SC-W, SC for Sport Coupe andReviewW for Warner engine. Unfortunately only 13 SC-Ws were built before WW2 interrupted production and the complete Ryan facility was re-arranged to produce PT-22s for the US military training schools.

Only nine Ryan SC-Ws are believed to survive today with most being re-engined with the 165hp (123 kW) Warner Scarab as they are the same physical size as the lower-powered model but more reliable and need less maintenance.

Steve’s SC-W was completed on May 18 1938 and was originally registered NC18916 in the old US registration system. It was the 11th aircraft from the production line and was owned by Doc Booth and Al Henning firstly at Dallas and later Oklahoma City. The aircraft was seconded to the US Air Force Air Transport Command during the war and was used for coastal surveillance with military serial 42‑107412. After the war it returned to the civil aircraft register as NC46207 and was later transferred to the present registration system as N46207.

The aircraft was wrecked in a landing accident at Santa Paula, California during 1989, but the rare machine refused to die with Alan Bushner in Fresno rebuilding the airframe and Richard Hulme in Santa Paula rebuilding the original 145hp Warner engine before Steve obtained the aircraft and brought it to Australia. The SC-W is resplendent in a magnificent blue, gold and silver paint scheme and suitably registered SCW.

Gina Bartie’s Piper Turbo Dakota WKJ is an interesting aircraft as only 91 of the type were built, with Gina’s aircraft being the 82nd and it is the first to be seen in this country. The Dakota was a development ofthe Pathfinder, itself developed from the Cherokee 235, and was designed to compete against the Cessna 182. In fact Piper hired a Cessna 182 during April 1975 to compare it against the Pathfinder. The end result was the Dakota with the semi-tapered wing from the Archer II, a Lycoming O-540-J3A5D powerplant with a redesigned cowl and an upgraded undercarriage. The complete package was faster, larger and had more range than the Pathfinder and compared very favourably with the Cessna 182 Skylane.

During 1976 Piper began developing the Turbo Dakota. It used the Archer II fuselage, the Dakota semi-tapered wing and a 200hp (150 kW) Continental TS10-3600FB turbocharged engine. It also had the redesigned wheel spats from the Dakota. It was originally to have a T-tail but that was dropped at the same time as the Arrow III returned to a conventional tail configuration. Piper released the Turbo Dakota during March 1979 as the world’s lowest-priced turbocharged aircraft and deliveries began later that same year.

Unfortunately the release of the model coincided with a sharp downturn in aircraft sales and Piper discontinued the Turbo Dakota by the end of the year with 15 aircraft still unsold. Those 15 aircraft were in fact sold the next year as 1980 models with an updated paint scheme but were actually built during 1979. It appears that Gina’s aircraft was one of the 15 1979/1980 models.

Although Skyplan Australia’s Twin Squirrel OFF is not a new or outstanding type – there are nine other AS355F1 Twin Squirrels presently flying in Australia – it is interesting inthe fact that it has had no fewer than five previous UK markings.

In the Deletions section elderly Hawker Siddeley 748 DQY has finally been withdrawn from use and scrapped. The 748 first came to Australia during August 2001 when Horizon Airlines/International Air Parts obtained it from Air Madagascar and registered it IPB. It was leased to Biman Bangladesh Airlines as S2-ADL from November 2004 but was back on the local register as DQY during June 2011. It could not take up its old markings as a Pitts Special had been registered IPB while the 748 was in Bangladesh. In fact DQY never made it back to Australia and was last reported derelict at Nairobi, Kenya still marked as S2-ADL.

Of the exports Robinson R44 Raven HLP is now in New Zealand with Frontier Helicopters at Whakatane and marked as ZK‑IID and Hawker 800XP MEP isregistered N173SC with US aircraft ferry specialists Southern Cross Aircraft at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ramsay Aircharter Falcon 2000EX RAM has been sold to Abelag Aviation in Brussels, Belgium and now flies as OO-PSE. Beech Baron RLS has been sold in the Philippines and achieved notoriety when it was forced to land at Manado, Indonesia by Indonesian air force Sukhoi fighter jets while being delivered from Dawin to Cebu in the Philippines on October 22.

Three aircraft have been deleted after accidents including Cessna 172 WLF which crashed near Wentworth, NSW during May 2012. The aircraft was destroyed and the pilot fatally injured in the crash with the ATSB unable to find a definitive reason for the accident.

Vans ZMH was also destroyed and the pilot fatally injured when it crashed at Gatton, Queensland on March 2 this year. From all the evidence collected, including video footage, the ASTB concluded that the pilot did not hold the necessary qualifications to fly the aircraft as pilot-in-command and was very likely conducting low-level aerobatics at a height from which recovery to normal flight was not complete before the aircraft contacted the ground.

Cessna 172 IGS was badly damaged on October 31 2013 during a flight from Parafield to Gum Creek near Clare, SA. The pilot had a part needed to repair a hay cutting machine and in order to get the part to the machine as quickly as possible he elected to land on a road close to the machine. As the aircraft touched down it was affected by a gust of wind which forced it off the road and into a tree and then through a gate and a fence.

Although the aircraft was substantially damaged the pilot only received minor injuries.
