Register Review

This month’s New Allocations listing contains two new and very interesting types. Bell Airacobra KWL is a genuine 1940s USAAF  fighter while the Air-Res Jungmann YUX is a new-build version of the German Bucker Jungmann WW2 trainer.

The Bell P-39 Airacobra is an all-metal, low-wing, single-seat  fighter and was the first American fighter  fitted with a tricycle undercarriage. It also had an unusual layout with the Allison V-1710 liquid-cooled V12 engine installed in the centre fuselage behind the cockpit with a three metre-long shaft under the pilot’s seat driving a propellor mounted in the nose of the aircraft. The engine layout allowed the nose to be more aerodynamic and left it free to be used as a weapons bay. It was the principal American  fighter in service when the US entered WW2 but was handicapped by having only a single-stage, single-speed supercharger limiting the aircraft to low altitude dog fights and short-range tactical strikes due to the lack of space in the fuselage for fuel tanks.

The Airacobra was used by the USAAF, RAF and Soviet air force during WW2 and later by the Free French air force and Italian air force. The RAF ordered almost 700 Airacobras but after the  first batch were delivered it was realised that its poor performance at altitude restricted its use in WesternEurope and only 80 were eventually delivered. Two hundred were diverted to the Russian air force which found it ideal for its own use and recorded the most individual kills attributed to any US fighter type. When P-39 production ceased in August 1944 Bell had built almost 10,000 with around half of these going to the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease program.

Two hundred P-39s from the British order were diverted to the southwest Pacific after the attack on Pearl Harbor but were mainly deployed to training units as the aircraft was outclassed by Japanese  fighters.

In early 1942, when Australia was experiencing Japanese air raids on northern Australian towns, the RAAF could not obtain sufficient numbers of new British or US  fighters and resorted to repairing and refurbishing older P-39s which were made redundant as the USAF received brand new P-39Ds.

Seven Airacobras were used by No 23 Squadron at Lowood, Queensland and another seven went to No 24 Squadron at Townsville.

When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany during 1933 he started to show his displeasure with the Treaty of Versailles, which banned Germany from making powered aircraft fights and military development, and immediately began making plans for civil and military aircraft production. The  first priority was for a suitable training aircraft and to this end Carl Bucker returned to Germany from Sweden bringing with him aircraft engineer Anders Andersson.

They formed Bucker Flugzeugbau GmbH and within six months the company had designed and built its first aircraft, the Bucker Bu131 Jungmann (young man).

Over the next seven years the company designed several new aircraft including the Bu133 Jungmeister and Bu 181 Bestmann. Anderson returned to Sweden at the start of the WW2 where he joined Saab.

During 1936 the Luftwa¥ e selected the Jungmann as its primary trainer and several overseas countries ordered Jungmanns for their pilot training organisations. Switzerland, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Japan were granted manufacturing licences. By the outbreak of war in EuropeBucker production had topped 1,000 and it is believed that a further 3,000 were built during the war.

By the end of the war most German Jungmanns had been destroyed and most survivors were from the licenced production lines in Spain, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia.

During 1968 an attempt was made by CASA in Spain to restart production primarily for the US market, but at the same time the Swiss air force decided to dispose of its extremely well-maintained Buckers as they were being replaced with Pilatus P-3s. Needless to say the Swiss air force flooded the market with the type and production of new aircraft by CASA was halted after only a very few aircraft were built.

During the early 1960s the Jungmann was still capable of winning aerobatic competitions over the British Tiger Moth and American Stearman, and US designer Curtiss Pitts was so impressed that he designed his original Pitts Special around the aerobatic capabilities of the Jungmann.

About 200 Jungmanns survive including some amateurbuilt replicas using modern engines and this has renewed interest in the type. During 1994 Janusz Karasiewicz began producing a version of the Jungmann in Poland using the name Historical Aircraft Services T-131PA Jungmann.

Last year Historical Aircraft Services was sold to Air-Res Aviation which continues to build the T-131PA fitted with a 140hp (105kW) LOM M332 engine and built using modern materials and production methods.

A Lycoming engine version is also available.

Two aircraft are Returning to the Register this issue including a DH. 82A Tiger Moth that has been out of service since 1998. Tonny Wolzak’s Tiger Moth UEF was built during 1940 and joined Number 2 Aircraft Depot at Richmond, NSW, on November 4 1940 marked as A17-151. It soon moved to the Elementary Flying Training School at Narrandera before a major overhaul at De Havilland’s Bankstown facility during November 1942. It then spent time at Cootamundra, Temora, Tamworth, Parkes and Point Cook before being offered for sale onto the civil market in December 1945.e Royal Aero Club of South Australia obtained the Tiger for £362 and it was put to work training pilots at Paraeld registered AXF.ree years later the Department of Civil Aviation decided the complete block of markings AXA to AXZ were not to be used and most of the aircraft previously registered in that block simply moved into the BX block. AXF became BXF but during April 1951 FW Burke at Wagga Wagga obtained the aircraft and changed it to the personalised registration of BWF.e Tiger was sold back to the Royal Aero Club of South Australia six years later and changed to UEF to allow Mr Burke to use the old markings on his new aircraft. However, two months later it was again registered BXF making it four registration changes in 12 years.

The Tiger Moth then spent the next 26 years in the Toowoomba area with a series of private owners as well as the Darling Downs Aero Club before moving to Cairns with Allen Hutchinson who used it for scenic sights around the area. Unfortunately during one of these nights the engine failed due to carburettor icing and the forced landing on a football held resulted in the aircraft nosing over and being badly damaged. The aircraft was never fully repaired but ended up in Syd Beck’s Aircraft Museum at Mareeba.

During 2008 Tonny Wozak and Peter and Brett Nelson formed a partnership to obtain the aircraft and bring it back to ying condition. Tonny has completed most of the work but recently moved the almost complete aircraft to Luskintyre for the new wings and rebuilt engine to be tested.e Tiger is now painted in traditionalRAAF training yellow and it is hoped that its post-restoration first night will take place during the life of this issue.

Fred Nolan’s Cessna A185 Skywagon MFU is also close to the end of its ground-up restoration with only the interior, avionics and exterior paint to be completed. The aircraft was delivered new to the Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF) at Mount Hagan, PNG during February 1972 and registered MFU. When PNG gained its independence and was allocated its own ICAO registration prex during 1974 MFU was simply changed to P2-MFU.

After 15 years with the MAF P2-MFU was obtained by Vensbach Lodge and was used to ferry tourists to the Lodge in the Sepik area for fishing trips. Unfortunately the aircraft crashed near Vanimo on August 25 1990 and was not repaired. It was brought back to Australia and registered OWZ during September 2004 but never ew as such.e wreck was stored by Tableland Topdressing at Armidale, NSW until Fred Nolan obtained it and began the full restoration. Fred has not decided on its final colours but it would be fantastic to see it returned to full MAF colours and markings.

Thirty-one aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this month including two Qantas Boeing 737-400s, TJU and TJW, which have been exported to South Africa and the US respectively. Other exports include Cessna 172 Skyhawk DBG which is now with Samoa Air and marked as 5W-RJO and Beech Duchess MLM which is now lying in New Zealand as ZK-WLS with the Ardmore Flying School at Auckland. PA-25 Pawnee GWS has been deleted due to accident damage where unfortunately the pilot suffered fatal injuries.e Pawnee was spreading superphosphate fertilizer on a property near Hallston, Victoria when shortly after taking o¥ it crashed into a gully and was completely destroyed by the post-impact fire.
