A good cross-section of types comprise the New Allocations in this issue, including three new Boeing 737s and two ATR 72s for Virgin Australia, an Airbus A320 for Tiger Airways and a used Fokker 100 for Network Aviation.

Virgin Australia continues to roll over its Boeing 737-700 series aircraft in favour of new -800 series machines. Three more examples, YIR, YIS and YIT, shown in this month’s listing, bring its 737 fleet to 77 including seven of the older -700s and 10 -800s operating in New Zealand.

The two new ATR 72s for Virgin Australia/Skywest Air-lines, FVN and FVP, bring the number of ATR 72s in the fleet to eight with 10 more on order.

The ATR 42/72 still has an impressive order book with almost 1,050 built and many more on order. The ATR 72 is a development of the ATR 42 which first flew on August 16 1984 and was designed to ser-vice the twin turboprop, short-haul regional market, mainly in Europe and the US.

Both variants are still avail-able with the ATR 72 account-ing for a little over half of total production. The basic ATR 42 fuselage with 40 to 52 seats was stretched by 4. 5m to accommo-date up to 78 passengers.

Wingspan and fuel capacity were increased and more pow-erful engines fitted to produce the ATR 72. Maiden flight of the ATR 72 was on October 27 1989 and Finnair was the first airline to put the type into service.

The ATR 42/72 series is easily recognisable by its high wing, bulky fuselage and rela-tively small tail area. Passenger loading is via the rear door, unusual for an airliner, while baggage and freight are loaded through the front door.

Tiger Airways has added another Airbus A320, VNQ, to its fleet with the airline recently announcing more routes and destinations. Tiger operates the Airbus A320 exclusively and VNQ has become the eleventh in its Australian fleet.

Network Aviation has added another Fokker 100, NHK, to its fleet, now boasting seven Embraer Brasilias and seven Fokker 100s.

Five of its Fokker fleet came from Avianca, Columbia and Network is expected to take an-other four from the 15-strong Avianca fleet as the South American airline has replaced them with Airbus A318s. The Fokker 100s are refurbished by Fokker in the Netherlands before delivery to Australia.

Three new types appear in the listing with two of these, OFZ and SUQ, amateur-built aircraft of which very little is known. The third type is the latest release from Tecnam, a P92TD Tail Dragger VET.

The tail dragger version of the popular P92 retains the metal construction and side-by-side seating of the nosewheel version and is available fitted with either the Rotax 912ULS, Rotax 914 Turbo or Lycoming O-233 engine. A cargo pod, glider tow hook and oversize main wheels also come as options.

VET is fitted with a Rotax powerplant and a cargo pod and was in a container on the high seas as this issue went to press. The aircraft was due to arrive during late August and after assembly and fitting of avionics and an Airmaster pro-peller initially will be used as a demonstration aircraft.

This is the fourth time VET has been on the side of a Tec-nam and importer Bruce Stark says the distinctive markings always attracts veterinarians and Vietnam veterans whenever it has appeared at airshows and fly-ins.

Pat Schipp’s dream aircraft, a Bushby Mustang ENI, is the culmination of almost 30 years of research, planning and build-ing and although not complete-ly finished he hopes to have it flying within six months.

The Bushby Mustang II was developed from the original Long Midget Mustang when Robert Bushby acquired the rights to produce the drawings in 1959. Bushby redesigned the aircraft making the fuselage wider to accommodate two side-by-side seats and generally making the whole aircraft more aerodynamic.

What evolved was a very sleek low-wing, tailwheel aircraft with, unfortunately, not many features of the original P-51 Mustang around which it was styled. Only the bubble cockpit and rather square-look-ing tail remain.

Pat built his Mustang II in his shed and although it is within easy reach of the airfield at Benalla the outer wings will have to be removed again for transportation to the aerodrome for its first flight and certifica-tion. At this stage it’s in an all-over grey colour scheme and fitted with a Lycoming O-360 engine taken from a crashed Cherokee 180.

Bristow Helicopters’ Euro-copter Super Puma ZFC has returned to its parent company in Aberdeen, Scotland where it has become G-ZZSP and RFDS Beech Super King Air MSU and Virgin Australia Boeing 737 VBK are now in the US.

The Super King Air has been in Australia since December 1988 and is now flying with Dynamic Avlease at Bridgewa-ter, Virginia as N48Q while the 737 has been flying for Virgin Australia for 10 years and is now back with lessor Interna-tional Lease Finance Corpora-tion in Los Angeles as N301LF.

Two aircraft are listed as deleted due to accidents with Beech Bonanza AVT going down at Geraldton during December 2010 and Cessna Centurion SZO coming to grief at Kununurra in August last year.

Beech Duke ORI also has been cancelled due to dam-age – but of a different type. The aircraft was parked at Caboolture, Queensland on the night of May 4 when vandals attacked the fuselage with an axe. It was reported that after draining fuel from a nearby Piper Navajo they took an axe to the Duke, causing enough damage to make it uneconomi-cal to repair.
