Bridging the fighter generation gap

In the mid to late 1990s as the B-2 entered frontline service, the F-22 was in development and the Joint Strike Fighter was being defined, some predicted that the USAF and many of its top-tier allies would have an all-fifth generation air combat force by 2020 or soon after.
But in recent years, delays or reductions in these programs and advances amongst the world’s ‘legacy’ fighter fleets and their derivatives have meant this goal is now unachievable.
