This issue’s New Allocations cover a good cross section of aircraft joining the register including Skywest’s fourth ATR‑72, four more Boeing 737-800s for Virgin Australia, two more Jonker gliders and another two Robinson R66s, bringing the total to nine turbine R66s now on the register.

Two new types are also included, a Viking Twin Otter and a Beech Premier executive jet.

Avwest’s Twin Otter 400 ZZH is the first example of the Viking Air built Twin Otter to be seen in this part of the world, and is the seventh production aircraft. The original De Havilland Canada (DHC) Twin Otter made its maiden flight on May 20 1965 with production starting later the same year. The high wing, twin turbine, unpressurised aircraft was fitted with a tricycle fixed undercarriage, and went on to become one of the most successful commuter airliners in the world with more than 800 built before production ended in December 1988. Over 100 Twin Otters have operated in Australia, PNG, New Zealand and the Pacifi c Islands with two still fl ying in Australia, no fewer than 16 in PNG, fi ve in Fiji and a similar number in other Pacifi c Island nations.

Viking Air of Victoria, British Columbia, which had been manufacturing replacement parts for all out‑of‑production DHC aircraft, obtained the tooling for the Twin Otter when production of the Series 300 ended in 1988. During February 2006 Viking also purchased the type certifi cates from Bombardier Aerospace for all out‑of‑production DHC types from the DHC‑1 Chipmunk through Beaver, Otter, Caribou, Buff alo, Twin Otter and Dash 7, and announced that it would be putting the Twin Otter back into production. Th e basic design of the new aircraft would remain the same, but more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada engines would be fi tted along with the latest avionics packages, upgraded electrical and lighting systems, and composites would be used for nonload‑bearing structures such as doors.

Transport Canada and the EASA issued type approval for the Viking Twin Otter during 2010 and a new production facility was built at Calgary.

Th e fi rst customer Twin Otter 400 Series, for Zimex Aviation of Switzerland, to be used for humanitarian work in Uganda, was delivered in July 2010. Th e second aircraft was the fi rst of two for Air Seychelles, while the third was the fi rst of 12 for the Peruvian air force. Th e next three production aircraft were fi tted with fl oats and delivered to Trans Maldivian Airways, a long time operator of Twin Otter aircraft, with the next off the production line the example now in Western Australia with Avwest.

Th e aircraft was displayed fi tted with fl oats and in an all‑white colour scheme at the National Business Aviation Association’s annual convention at Henderson Executive Airport, Las Vegas, during October before being delivered to Australia.

Th e Beech Premier was the fi rst fully Beech designed bizjet after building the Mitsubishi Diamond, renamed Beech 400, and the acquisition of the BAe 125 series from the UK.

Th e Beech Hawker 800 and 1000 (nee BAe 125‑800 and 125‑1000) designs, along with the lessons learned from the less than successful Starship, gave Beech the technology needed to develop a completely new executive jet. Th e Premier was announced in October 1995 and combined a composite fuselage along with a metal wing. Th e aircraft was powered by two Williams FJ44 turbofans and had seating for six.

Easternwall Logistics’ Premier, TGQ, is a 1A Model which was released during September 2005 and included a new cabin interior and upgraded avionics and electrical systems. Both the Premier and Premier 1A can be operated in single pilot mode, and the aircraft was designed to compete with the Cessna Citation series of light executive jets.

Until now the only civil DHC Caribou that has been seen in Australia was BFR of Ansett‑MAL, which operated in PNG from September 1965 until June 1969. Th e Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) has now changed that by acquiring two ex RAAF Caribou and registering them VBA and VBB.

With the retirement of the RAAF’s Caribou fl eet in November 2009 most were stored at Oakey, which is where HARS president Bob de la Hunty and an engineering team inspected them and selected two to be kept airworthy with the assistance of Australian Aerospace. Both aircraft have now been moved to HARS’s Wollongong base, with RAAF crews ferrying in A4‑210 (now VBA) on October 29 and A4‑234 (now VBB) on November 2. Both saw service in Vietnam with 35SQN.

Tom Russell’s Chipmunk BGM is the second Portuguese built example to come to Australia and has arrived via Canada and the UK. Th e Portuguese air force initially obtained 10 Chipmunks from the UK production line, and later built a further 66 under licence at the Ofi cinas Gerais de Material Aeronautico (OGMA) factory at Alvera, just north of Lisbon.

Russell’s Chipmunk was built during 1958, and after military service as FAP1353 became CS‑DAC with the Aero Club de Costa Verde at Esphinho. In March 2006 it was exported to the UK as G‑CDWF and two years later emigrated to Canada and with a few quick brush strokes became C‑GDWF. It now joins more than 50 Chipmunks fl ying in Australia.

Ray Taylor’s amateur built Stolp Starduster XRS is only the third of its type to fl y in Australia – which is surprising as more than 1000 have been built around the world since it fi rst fl ew in the 1960s. Th e SA300 Starduster is a two‑seat, tail wheel biplane somewhat similar in appearance to the Pitts Special. It is stressed to +/‑ 6G, and although basic aerobatic manoeuvres can be performed it is not intended to be a fully aerobatic aircraft.

Th e Starduster fuselage is a steel tube frame covered with fabric, while the wings are made up of spruce spars and ribs with fabric covering. Th ere are no machined metal fi ttings or complicated tubular bends needed, and all the raw materials and prefabricated parts such as fi breglass turtle backs and engine cowls, welded aluminum fuel tanks and plexiglass windshields, are available direct from the Aircraft Spruce and Specialty factory in California.

Twenty‑three aircraft are shown in the deletions section this month, with more than half of these having either been reregistered or transferred to the RA‑Aus register and are therefore still fl ying in Australia.

Five have been exported, two Kawasaki BK117s to PNG, a Westland Bell 47G to New Zealand, an Agusta A109 to the US, and the magnifi cently rebuilt Curtiss Warhawk which is now in the UK.

Murray Griffi ths’ Warhawk PIV was exported some time ago, prior to Murray’s untimely passing, but has only just been cancelled and registered in the UK. It is now marked as G‑CGZP and owned by Patina Ltd of Jersey, Channel Islands.

Agusta A109 NBX is now registered N109JR to Wells Fargo Bank of Salt Lake City, Utah, while Westland Bell 47G ULL is fl ying in New Zealand marked as ZK‑HBF with RM Aviation at Christchurch.

Unfortunately we have to report two accidents, one of which claimed two lives. Robinson R22 Beta RTB was destroyed while mustering cattle on a station in the Northern Territory when its tail rotor hit a tree and the helicopter landed heavily, while Robinson 44 Astro HFH crashed at Cessnock, NSW, fatally injuring two of the occupants. Th e pilot of the Astro was being checked out by an instructor when he assessed that the helicopter’s hydraulic boost system had failed. Th e instructor elected to reposition the helicopter to an area where the system could be checked, but control was lost while hover taxiing and the aircraft hit the ground and was consumed by fi re. Th e pilot managed to escape, but the instructor and the passenger were fatally injured.
