Register Review
of type Best Off Aircraft Australia’s Nynja, ELJ.
After last issue’s influx of new models for the Avalon Airshow, this issue’s offering has only two new types to Australian skies – the Guimbal Cabri G2 and the Best Off Nynja.
The Guimbal Cabri G2 is an all-composite two-seat helicopter featuring side-by-side seating, a three bladed, fully articulated main rotor and a Fenestron enclosed tail rotor, and is available with a skid undercarriage or equipped with floats.
Designed by Frenchman and ex-Eurocopter engineer Bruno Guimbal, the G2 is a development of the G1 which first flew during April 1992.
The helicopter is powered by a 180hp (135kW) Lycoming O-360-J2A engine derated to 145hp (108kW), providing a maximum cruise speed of 100kt with a 90kt cruise, maximum ceiling of 7500ft, 380nm range and 5h 40min endurance. The Lycoming is a horizontally opposed, four cylinder, air cooled, normally aspirated unit with dual ignition, and drives the main rotor via a belt and the tail rotor via a set of bevel gears.
The prototype set three world records during 2006, claiming the altitude without payload and two time to climb records for a piston engine helicopter below 500kg. After two pre-production prototypes, the first production aircraft was delivered to Ixair France toward the end of 2008, with two examples going to Eurocopter shortly after for basic training and for possible development into an unmanned reconnaissance platform.
Helicopter Transport and Training is the Australian agents for the Cabri G2 and already has the first two, CDU and ZZT, on line at its Bankstown facility. The first of these has already been sold, with several enquiries for the second aircraft at the time of going to press. Helicopter Transport and Training also provides VIP corporate charter, joyflights, scenic tours, aerial photography and private hire with four Robinson Beta IIs and a Raven I.
While the new Cabri G2s will be mainly used in the training environment, they can also be used for scenic and familiarisation flights in the Sydney area.
Best Off Aircraft Australia’s Nynja, ELJ, is the latest development of the Best Off Skyranger series of kit built aircraft from France. Philippe Prevot designed the Skyranger to be a very simple and strong aircraft for the amateur builder, which only used straight aluminium tubes bolted together and therefore needing no bending or welding. The high wing two-seater is delivered from the factory in France in six boxes and includes everything except the engine and instruments.
The latest Nynja contains all the basic design features of previous models, the V-Fun, V-Max and Swift, but now has some carbon fibre parts, dual control columns, hydraulic brakes on the main wheels, a rear luggage compartment, and can be equipped with a Rotax 582, 912 or 912S engine as well as the Jabiru 2200. It can also be fitted with a two or three bladed fixed pitch propeller.
Optional extras include a ballistic recovery parachute system, cabin heating, two piece transparent doors and carburetfirst tor heat, while the aircraft can sit on tricycle, tail wheel, skis or floats, and a heavy duty larger wheel and tyre option is also available along with glass fibre wheel spats.
More than 20 Skyrangers are active in Australia and four in New Zealand, ELJ being the first Nynja variant to fly in either country.
Dave Harris’ CZL Aero 145 ZCL returns to the register after 35 years of storage and refurbishment, although when it was last seen it was far from being ready to fly again. The Czech built aircraft first came to Australia during October 1962, and was brought here by CZL agents Dulminson Aircraft in Sydney who had imported three of the type during 1960 without much interest from potential customers. First registered WWC, it was operated by Commodore Aviation at Port Lincoln, South Australia, until June 1976 when it went to Ron Fuller at Port Lincoln. Shortly after, it was cancelled from the register and stored first at Glenelg and later at Port Adelaide.
It was noted at Parafield during 2007, but was then moved to Palamanna where restoration back to flying condition is slowing taking place.
Twenty-three aircraft are shown in the Deletions section this issue with almost half of these being exported. Pel-Air continues to dispose of its fleet of Metro freighters, with EEJ now flying in the US as N617BT with Career Aviation at Wilmington, Delaware, but operated by Sierra West Airlines. EEJ follows EEO and EEP into service with Career Aviation with EEN, EER, and EES soon to follow. EEU and EEX have gone to Bemidji Aviation Services at Bemidji, Minnesota, while EEQ has remained in Australia with Wynrye Aviation at Bankstown.
Finally, EET went to Darwin where it was scrapped and used as a parts source for Hardy Aviation’s Metro fleet.
Pel-Air is replacing its Metros with Saab 340s from its associate company Regional Express.
Ex-Republic of Singapore Air Force SIAI Marchetti S211 BKS is the second of the batch to be exported to the US, with at least another three expected to be shipped to America soon.
Also in the USA is Cessna 414 DUA which is now flying as N414EH with Surdex Corporation at Chesterfield, Missouri, and Virgin Boeing 737 VOA which has been returned to its lessors, CIT Leasing in New York, and since leased to Sun Country Airlines as N814SY.
Closer to home, Saab 340 UYA and AgustaWestland AW139 NZF are now flying in New Zealand, the Saab with Vincent Aviation at Wellington marked as ZK-VAB, while the Agusta is registered ZKHNO with Helicopters (NZ) at Nelson.
Boeing 727 DHE was the last flying example of the type on the Australian register, but it has now been exported to Thailand where it is operated by K-Mile as HS-SCK. Aviation Australia still has its 727 TBS registered (ex Ansett RMS), but it is non-operational and is used as an instructional airframe at its Brisbane Airport facility.
The first Boeing 727s arrived during September 1964 when Ansett Airlines and Trans- Australia Airlines received the first of their six early model 727s. Both airlines received a further 12 -200 series 727s beginning in late 1972, and the type quickly became a favourite with passengers for its speed and comfort, and with enthusiasts for its looks and sound.
Ansett added four long range 727s to its fleet during 1981 for its Melbourne and Sydney to Perth route, avoiding a fuel stop in Adelaide, while Bloodstock Air Services used a 727 freighter as a dedicated racehorse transport between April 1983 and December 1984.
The 727 has been used extensively in Australia in cargo configuration, with Pacific Air Express using PAE between August 2000 and June 2001.
This aircraft became TXE and was joined by TXH in 2002 when operated by Transasian Express/Jetex. During 2002 Transaustralian Air Express began operations with VLG (ex RMX), VLI, VLH and VLF (ex RMN). Operators of the four aircraft changed to Jetex and then Australian air Express before the aircraft were sold overseas – VLG to Canada, VLI to Malaysia and VLF and VLH to America.
DHE came to Australia during May 1995 and has been used by DHL, Asian Express, European Air Transport and Tasman Cargo Airlines while in this country (all the time last of the trijets The last flying Australian registered 727, DHE, is now flying in Thailand. (Les Bushell) flying trans-Tasman services for DHL), and was joined by DHF on lease from Transmile Air Services in Malaysia between August and December 2005.
Four aircraft are listed as crashed or damaged, with Cirrus SR22 SLS ditching into the sea off Dent Island, Queensland, during December 2009 while operated by Maltair.
The aircraft has now officially been cancelled and Maltair has replaced it with a brand new SR20 which can be found in the new allocations section – also registered SLS.
Cessna Titan TMP has been damaged in an industrial accident, while Alliance Airlines Fokker 100 FKE has eventually been cancelled after sitting outside its Brisbane Airport hangar since 2004. The Fokker was being operated by Air Niugini as P2-ANA when a mercury spill in the hold caused a chemical reaction between the mercury and the aluminium airframe. The aircraft was flown to Brisbane under a special dispensation and registered FKE during July 2004. Since then it has been slowly stripped of useful parts to be used on Alliance Airlines’ other Fokker 100s, and the bare fuselage was donated to the ARFF service during September last year.
