TAA retiree Convair 240 N396CG was originally delivered to Trans Australia Airlines in October 1948 as VH-TAS, and has
been parked at Camarillo for a number of years. (Gordon Reid)

This Year Celebrations to Recognise the 75th Anniversary of the First Flight of the Douglas Dc-3 Were the Highlight of Your Columnist’s Annual Trip to the United States, Which Took Me to Rock Falls in Northern Illinois and Then Later the Eaa Airventure 2010 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I Visted a Number of Other Airfields on My Travels, and Below is a Listing of Aircraft I Noted Which Have Had a Connection With Our Part of the World.

On July 18 I Stopped at Camarillo, California, and There Found Convair 240 N396cg.

This Aircraft, Which Was Delivered to Trans Australia Airlines in October 1948 as Vh-tas, Has Been Parked at Camarillo for a Number of Years. However, on My Arrival I Found That It Was Being Dismantled for Road Transport to a Museum in Kansas City. To My Knowledge Vh-tas is the Last Survivor of the Five Convair 240s Taa Purchased.

Two Days Later I Visited Mojave and in the Flight Research Hangar I Noted Its Ga-8 Airvan N215av. Later That Day at Victorville I Noted Qantas 767‑338ers Vh‑oga, Vh‑ogc and Vh-ogd, Along With 747-4h6s Vh‑oec and Vh‑oed and 747-438 Vh-ojk. All Aircraft Were in Storage With the 767s Having All Qantas Titles and Logos Including Their Registrations Removed. The 747-400s Also Had All Qantas Titles and Logos Removed, but They Retained Their Registrations.

Noted at San Bernadino Was 727-277f Vh-vlh, Which Was Last Operated by Heavylift Cargo Airlines and is the Former Ansett Vh-anb. The 727, Which Was Cancelled From the Australian Register in June ’09 When Sold as N727hl, Was Still Carrying Its Australian Registration.

silver city survivor The Cavanaugh Air Museum’s DC-3 N33VW operated in Australia just after WW2 with Silver City
Airways of Broken Hill. (Gordon Reid)

I Then Flew to Chicago/ O’hare and on My First Evening in the Mid West I Stopped at Hinckley, Illinois, Where I Found Pac 750xl N902st of the Chicagoland Skydiving Center Busy Hauling Skydivers.

I Then Headed to Rock Falls Where ‘the Last Time’ Group Had Organised a Fly-in of Dc‑3/c-47 Aircraft, and There I Spent a Very Pleasant Five Days While a Total of 26 Dc-3s and One Dc-2 Flew in From All Over the Us and Canada for the Event. Among Those Was Dc-3 N1xp, an Aircraft Which Spent Time in Australia During Ww2 With the Us 5th Air Force, and While Operating in the Region It Carried the Callsigns Vhcdr and Vhcfv.

Most of the Douglas Aircraft at Rock Falls Then Flew North to Oshkosh to Swell the Dc-3 Numbers There to 58. Among the Dc-3s at Oshkosh Was the Cavanaugh Air Museum Dc-3 N33vw Which is Painted in Usaaf Colours as 320401. This Dc-3 Operated in Australia Just After Ww2 and Was Registered Vh-bhc to Silver City Airways of Broken Hill.

In the Trade Exhibit Area Gippsaero Had on Display Ga-8 Airvans N470cp of the Civil Air Patrol and N686ga, While Pacific Aerospace Had on Display P‑750 Xstol Zk‑kak.
