Register Review

conversion candidate Qantas Boeing 767-300ER OGA (foreground) is now on the US register as N316CM with Cargo Aircraft Management at Orlando, Florida. It
is one of three Qantas 767s acquired by Cargo Aircraft Management parent Air Transport Services Group for conversion into freighters. (Seth Jaworski)

The New Allocations section this issue contains three new types, a Navion A, a Clancy Skybaby and a Skeeter Junior experimental helicopter.

Bill Mailer and Keith Radke have joined forces to bring Navion SKR to Australia, but unfortunately the aircraft was badly damaged during shipping from the US and it is not known if it can be repaired as the fuselage has been virtually broken in half. The aircraft has been retrofitted with a 230hp (172kW) Continental engine, but thankfully this has not been damaged in transit.

The Navion was originally designed by North American Aviation during the latter part of WW2 to fill an expected postwar demand for civil aircraft. It was an all metal low wing four-seater with a retractable undercarriage.

Either a 185hp (138kW) or 205hp (153kW) Continental E-185 engine was available and over 1000 examples were built at North American’s plantat Inglewood, California.

During 1947 North American was gearing up for F-86 Sabre production and moving away from civil aircraft, and the type certificate for the Navion was sold to Ryan Aeronautical Corporation in San Diego which continued to build the basic Navion. In 1949 the Navion A was introduced with an improved fuel system and increased capacity as well as minor interior changes, and during 1950 the Navion B was released with a 260hp (193kW) Lycoming powerplant. Unfortunately only 222 Navion Bs were built due to increased competition from other manufacturers in a decreasing market.

Clancy Skybaby UMH is a replica of one of the earliest Australian aircraft designs.

One of three Clancy brothers, Bill, designed the Skybaby during 1931 with the brothers helping with the building of the aircraft. The Skybaby was a single-seat tail dragger with a strut braced parasol wing and was fully aerobatic. It was built of wood with metal fittings and was covered with linen and incorporated solid rubber tyres and a tail skid. It was originally fitted with a Henderson side valve engine, but after suffering overheating issues Bill redesigned the heads and fitted alloy pistons. Dual ignition was added and the engine now produced 38hp (28kW).

Eric Shipton’s Skybaby is the third to be built – the first being the original while a second was built in the US and then donated to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney where it still resides. The third aircraft was started in 1982 and the project passed through several owners before Eric obtained the almost complete aircraft about 12 months ago.

At one time it was appropriately registered 10‑1931 with the Australian Ultralight Federation. The Skybaby has recently flown and is fitted with a 1600cc 50hp (37kW) Jabiru engine, but it will probably be upgraded to the 2200cc 80hp (60kW) Jabiru in the near future.

The Skeeter Junior ZOL is the brainchild of South African Francois van Teijlingen who has been interested in light helicopters since around 1985 when he first saw a Benson Gyrocopter.

He went on to build three Bensons for other people before obtaining a Scorpion helicopter for himself. Not impressed with the handling of this machine he then bought a Brantly with a view to restoring it, but found it too far gone so salvaged the engine and scrapped the rest. Next came a Hughes 300C from Chile which Francois planned to power with two small capacity turbine engines – a project which was never completed before coming to Australia.

Francois’s latest project is a single-seat lightweight helicopter which he has called the Skeeter Junior. The proofof- concept mockup has been completed using a mild steel airframe, and the next step is to build the complete airframe again using aircraft grade chrome moly. The powerplant will be a 135hp (100kW) four stroke, three cylinder Yamaha snowmobile engine. Francois is planning to have the prototype flying before the end of the year and is hoping that the mustering industry will take an interest in the helicopter to enable full scale production.

Four aircraft are Returning to the Register this issue with by far the most interesting being Mike Worthington’s Metal Moth UOI. Unfortunately it will be some time before the aircraft is flying again, but Mike has registered it so that the original markings for the Moth are not allocated to another aircraft. UOI is presently with Ray Windred at Luskintyre where the fuselage frame has been completed along with the turtle decks. The engine has been reconditioned by Les Penna and is ready for installation, and work on the wings will be commencing shortly.

Mike is planning on two years before the aircraft is flying again and he is still looking for several parts including cockpit instruments and wing fittings.

With England being the best place to source De Havilland parts, Mike is fortunate that his job as a Qantas captain takes him to London often. The DH. 60M Metal Moth was a development of the DH. 60G Gipsy Moth, which in turn owes its heritage to the DH. 51 biplane of which only one saw service in Australia.

The DH. 60 was a two-seat training and touring aircraft with a wooden frame and plywood and fabric covered surfaces. The wings folded, allowing owners to hangar their aircraft in confined spaces. It made its first flight on February 22 1925 in the hands of Geoffrey de Havilland and the prototype was fitted with a Cirrus engine.

Although the Cirrus engine was reliable it relied on reconditioned parts from old Renault engines of which supply was intermittent. During 1927 De Havilland decided to build its own engine which could be manufactured alongside Moth production and therefore would negate the need to be reliant on outside sources. The engine was called the Gipsy and the first DH. 60G Gipsy Moth flew in 1928.

The aircraft was an immediate success, with many flying clubs using them exclusively and each being subsidised by government grants. By 1930 about 85 per cent of aircraft in September 2004, but it is believed that it has not flown since it was damaged in PNG.

Now off the register it will be restored to its former glory and its original markings of MFU have been reserved for it.

Beech 400A NTX has been exported to America, leaving only three of the type still flying in Australia, and Qantas Boeing 767 OGA is also now on the US register after being stored at Victorville, California, since November last year. NTX is now registered N584SC with Southern Cross Aircraft of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while the 767 in now N316CM and is with Cargo Aircraft Management at Orlando, Florida.

Southern Cross Aircraft is a sales and brokering company, so the Beech 400 will probably move on to another owner shortly, while OGA will be converted to a freighter.

Cessna 152 FMG was destroyed after a mid-air crash with Liberty XLY near Bankstown during December 2008.

Unfortunately, both instructor and student pilot in the 152 were killed in the accident, while the Liberty made it back to Bankstown Airport with only minor injuries to the two people onbord. n flying in Great Britain were De Havilland types and most of these were Gipsy Moths.

The original DH. 60 could be bought for £650 and, despite the additional costs of producing a much more modern engine and the effects of inflation, the Gipsy Moth could be obtained for the same price.

The DH. 60M Metal Moth was developed for the Canadian market using an all metal tubular fuselage, but many found their way onto the European market and the type was built under licence in the USA and Norway as well as Canada. The type was also modified for military training purposes using the Gipsy II engine and swept back main planes. This model was designated DH. 60T, but the modifications were so comprehensive that it was decided to give it its own model number – and so the DH. 82 Tiger Moth was born.

Mike’s Metal Moth came to Australia during June 1930 and was delivered to Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services, today’s Qantas. It is believed to be the 33rd aircraft owned by Qantas. It was sold to Mr R Brand of Childers, Queensland, only three months later, and although its registration lapsed on July 1 1935 it continued flying and eventually crashed at Darwin on November 9 1936.

The other three aircraft listed in the Aircraft Returning to Register section have all been restored after short periods off the register due to CASA revoking their markings or being withdrawn from use.

  1. The Deletions section contains the usual mix of reregistrations, transfers to the RA-Aus register and aircraft withdrawn from use – with one notable exception. Cessna Skywagon OWZ has been deregistered in order to undergo a complete refurbishment during which it will be painted in the same colour scheme as it was when operated as a mission aircraft in New Guinea. The aircraft was delivered new to the Missionary Aviation Fellowship at Mount Hagen during February 1972 and was first registered MFU. When PNG gained independence and its Civil Aviation Authority allocated its own registration prefix in 1974, MFU simply became P2-MFU. The aircraft was damaged during 1990 and came to Australia some time later. It was registered OWZ
