Register Review

coming cub A factory built Carbon Cub SS similar to Carbon Cub EX CJB being
built by Jim Stonier. (CubCrafters)

Seventy-six aircraft appear in the New Allocations section this issue and with only 26 shown in the Deletions listing there certainly does not seem to be a downturn in local aircraft ownership.

Australia is one of the very few countries around the world that re-issues markings and CASA seems to have set a new record by allocating ADU to a Piper Arrow only four days after deleting the Aerospatiale Fennec ADU. Also ANB has been re-issued to a Piper Turbo Lance only three months after the fatal crash of Airnorth Brasilia ANB. It seems strange that some markings have been used as many as 10 or 11 times whereas other markings have never been used. Also of note is the re-issue of traditional TAA/ Qantas markings in the TA and TJ block. J and J Aviation’s Piper Warrior has become TAJ after a DC-3 and Boeing 737 have worn these marks and Malcolm MacLeod’s Beech Baron is now TJN after being used by a DC-9 and a Boeing 737.

Three new types are shown in the listing this issue – two amateur built kit aircraft and the latest development of the Gulfstream IV.

Perhaps of most interest is Jim Stonier’s Carbon Cub CJB, which owes its heritage to the iconic Piper Super Cub. Super Cub enthusiast Jim Richmond visited Alaska in 1980 where he found many Super Cubs in need of some TLC. After returning home he decided to sell his home insulation business and switch to rebuilding Super Cubs. Over a period of time Jim, an accomplished airframe and engine mechanic, designed several modifications and refinements to the original design which he incorporated into his rebuilds. During the next two decades more and more parts were being manufactured and so many modifications were being added that the finished product was deemed a new aircraft – and the CubCrafters Top Cub was born.

The new type kept the basic shape of the Piper Super Cub but included a wider fuselage with larger doors. The steel frame and fabric covering was retained but all parts made from wood in the original Super Cub – fuselage stringers, cowls and wingtips – were replaced with carbon fibre.

CubCrafters offers four models – the original Top Cub, the factory built Carbon Cub SS and Sport Cub S2, as well as the kit built Carbon Cub EX.

new chippy Chipmunk POR is currently being re-assembled by Transaero at
Sunbury. (Kim Skyring)

There are presently two Sport Cubs on the RA-Aus register, but Jim’s is the first of its type with CASA and is fitted with a 180hp (135kW) Lycoming powerplant. CJB is painted blue and white and it is hoped that its first flight will take place before Christmas.

Questair Venture NYS is an odd looking aircraft due to its design brief. Questair was formed in 1985 by American Ed MacDonough who engaged Jim Griswold to design an aircraft with a large two-seat sideby- side cockpit, baggage space and engine compartment with the smallest possible airframe and very streamlined bodywork.

The result was a fast, long range touring aircraft with a rather ‘dumpy’ look and small wing and tail surfaces. The Venture kit uses pre-formed multicurvature metal fuselage, wing and tail panels and is fitted with a tricycle undercarriage and a 280hp (209kW) Continental engine. The Venture first flew during July 1987 and in 1991 a fixed undercarriage version was released which also had an optional third rear seat.

Marcplan Charter’s Gulfstream G450 MBP replaces its Hawker 800XP. Long considered the most prestigious biz jet manufacturer in the world Gulfstream is best known for its large, comfortable and fast aircraft with the G-IV series being one of the best selling bizjets in the world. The G450 is an upgrade of the G-IV which was, in itself, an outstanding aircraft. In production since mid decade, the G450 has a maximum operating speed of Mach 0. 88 and a range of 4350nm, and a G450 recently set a new speed record between Denver and Honolulu. As you would expect the G450 cockpit it fitted with the advanced avionics – Honeywell’s Primus Epic suite – and customers can personalise the cabin or choose from six standard configurations for 12 to 16 passengers.

The three most popular vintage training aircraft in Australia at the moment are all British designed – the Tiger Moth, Auster and Chipmunk – and enthusiasts will be very pleased to see two more Chipmunks added to the register – ATH and POR.

The most interesting of these is the Portuguese example POR. The Forca Aerea Portuguesa purchased 10 British built Chipmunks from De Havilland and contracted Oficinas Gerais de Material Aeronautico, based near Lisbon, to licence build a further 66 examples. During 1974 the Communist party came to power in Portugal and drastically cut back flying training time. As a result American John Hawke managed to purchase five Chipmunks with extremely low flying time.

One of these, serial number 1354, was later sold to David Shepard of Arizona who registered it N64747. John Fisher of Harcourt, Victoria, obtained the rare Chipmunk earlier this year and the aircraft is currently being reassembled by Transaero at Sunbury. POR has a mere 970 flying hours on the airframe compared with UK built Chipmunks which are considered “young” with 5000 hours, and some of the 1997 RAF disposals were around 12000 hours.

Karl Moore obtained his Chipmunk ATH from auction during 1996 after being retired from RAF service at Newton, UK. It was originally delivered to the RAF at 10 Elementary Flying Training School Pershore and was later used by University Air Squadron at Cambridge, Liverpool, St Andrews and Castle Bromwich, as well as the Flying Training School at Church Fenton. As with most Chipmunks it suffered its fair share of mishaps, but each time it was repaired and it was in good condition when Karl obtained it. Even so, the aircraft was given a complete rebuild over the next five years and it was then registered G-BZXE.

Karl’s recent move from the UK to Australia has seen the Chipmunk arrive on our shores, but it may be a while before it is reassembled and is flying again.

Seven aircraft are listed as “withdrawn from use” in the Deletions section this month, although this is often used as a generic term to cover a range of different scenarios. The three Qantas Boeing 747-300s EBV, EBW and EBY, were ferried to Marana, USA, for storage during December 2008 and January 2009. Although they were officially cancelled as “sold”, it is most likely that they were sold to a local parts recovery company and will be scrapped after all useful parts have been salvaged.

Cessna 441 Conquest VEM will not fly again after Cessna announced in August 2007 that the type’s airworthiness could not be assured after 22,500 flying hours, and CASA responded by grounding all 441s when this limit had been reached.

Rockwell Thrush Commander RQI has been automatically deleted as it was originally registered for a one year limited period which has now expired. The aircraft may now be exported or it could be permanently added to the local register.

RTR is a brand new Robinson R44 Raven only registered ten days before cancellation, so it seems very unlikely that it has been ‘withdrawn from use’ and we must wait to find out what its future holds.

Of the exports, Cessna 172 TSC is the latest of several of the type that have gone to Indonesia in recent months, and TBM850 SMZ has returned to the US after Strategic Air Charter replaced it with a Citation CJ1.

Aerospatiale Dauphin NHI is now in the US after only three months in this country, while Lloyd Offshore Helicopters’ Sikorsky S-76 LYO is back with CHC Helicopters in Canada and has taken up its previous Canadian marking of C-GIML.

Jetstar Airbus JQW has been transferred to Jetstar Asia and is now registered in Singapore, Robinson R44 Raven HHZ has gone to China and Sikorsky S-76 BKS is now flying in Korea.
